Taking care of your mental health as a Hair Salon or Beauty Salon Owner - buildyoursalon.com

Who is looking after the salon owner?

We are so good at looking after the needs of others in our salon businesses and so accomplished at making others feel better.

And yet few salon owners take the time to properly recognise their achievements.

Recognise your achievements

I know business is not always plain-sailing. What's more, life overall can feel overwhelming. That's why taking just a few moments to recognise your incredible achievements can be time well spent.

Struggling to find an achievement to celebrate? Let me help.

The biggest threat to your business was not because you weren’t trying, because you weren’t putting the hours in, or because of some slip in your standards. You have survived an enormous amount and nothing life, COVID or the economy has thrown at you has beaten you yet. Everything you have done so far has led you to this place and you are perfectly placed for the next chapter in your amazing story.

The fact that you are here and in business at all is a triumph!

Noticing the wins

I love to journal. Even if you're not in the daily habit, take some time occasionally to find three things you've accomplished in the last 24 hours. And don't put your pencil down until you've found them - however small, write them down.

This helps build self-esteem and can help with feelings of overwhelm and procrastination. Essentially, we're building positive momentum - it makes you notice progress and helps prevent feeling 'stuck'.

Celebrate!

Show yourself kindness and recognise your achievements regularly. You know that celebrating with your team when they hit a business goal can be a lot of fun and boost motivation. Similarly, building meaningful rewards into your targets can help enormously too.

More importantly, you must make good on those promises. You know that your team members would feel hard done by if you promised them a treat and then didn't deliver. In the same way, personal motivation will react badly to unkept promises.

Again and again, I hear business owners hit milestones and then talk themselves out of the reward. “I only hit that because … we only sold so many because …”. But when it's time to dig deep we need every part of your mind working towards your goals. If you have failed to deliver on promises in the past, there's a part of your mind that will always hold back and fail to deliver that extra push in motivation.

Dream big - but plan small

Of course, I want you to keep your business dreams big. Your goals should make you salivate through anticipation and excitement!

However, big dreams are future-based. Failing to break your ambitions down can quickly lead to overwhelm and harm your longer-term performance.

Spend time every week planning so that your day-to-day goals are small and challenging but manageable. Small goals help keep us rooted in the present, reduce overwhelm and give us plenty of opportunities to celebrate some wins!

  1. Take time to journal your achievements.
  2. Dream big but make time every week to break your goals down
  3. Build small rewards into your goals and celebrate the wins!
